Doing Business as a Designer: Keeping Distractions at Bay

One of the hardest things to fend off is distractions. This especially hurts freelancers and business owners. Distractions keep you away from reaching a goal or accomplishing vital tasks.  

If you learn how to recognize them, you’ll be able to keep yourself on track and get things done.

Let’s get specific on the types of distractions…

The Blatantly Obvious Distractions:
  • T.V
  • Video Games
  • Cell Phones
  • Surfing the Internet
  • Social Media (Twitter, FaceBook, MySpace, etc.)
  • pr0n

The Less Obvious Distractions:

  • Conversations that go off a tangent
  • Researching for a solution that eventually goes into surfing the web

The Subtle Distractions:

  • Conducting too much market research
  • Planning to plan
  • Theorizing about outcomes your cannot control
  • Spending too much time thinking about the future
  • Doing too much activities that don’t contribute to a sale

Distractions also originate from negligence. For example:

 

  • If you are not exercising regularly and eating healthy, your chances of getting sick are much higher. When you get sick, you get distracted.
  • If you are not regularly maintaining your vehicle, your chances of it breaking down are much greater. When you need to get somewhere and your vehicle is not working, you get distracted.
  • If you are not regularly maintaining your computer, your chances of it not operating optimally are much greater. When you are working on a client project and your computer crashes, you get distracted.

 

Distraction You Cannot Prevent

And of course, there are distractions you just cannot prevent. However being mentally prepared will help you to take care of those distractions in the most effective way.

Conclusion

Most distractions are preventable. Stay disciplined and build it into your life permanently. Your business, lifestyle, family, and friends are counting on you.
